Pictorial postcard of twin wax dolls, about 1850, Bethnal Green Museum: Postcard Signed: postcard with two British stamps (5d. & 4d. bearing likenesses of Queen Elizabeth II / Air Mail ), to Herb Hosmer / Racketty-Packetty House / South Lancaster / Massachusetts; signed "Regards from petit Soldat! Maurice" "So far everything has been too exciting - it seems my Wild Things has caused quite a sensation & I'm busy from morning to night. I'm beat - but it's great fun." This letter also deals with receiving a pamphlet on doll houses and Sendak's visits to Windsor and Hampton Court. Maurice Bernard Sendak (1928 - 2012) was an American illustrator and writer of children's books. He became widely known for his book Where the Wild Things Are, first published in 1963. Born to Jewish-Polish parents, his childhood was affected by the death of many of his family members during the Holocaust. Sendak also wrote works such as In the Night Kitchen, Outside Over There, and illustrated many works by other authors including the Little Bear books by Else Holmelund Minarik. He won practically every award for illustrating children's books; most notably: the Caldecott Medal from the ALA as illustrator of "the most distinguished American picture book for children", Where the Wild Things Are, 1964 (Sendak was also one of the Caldecott runners-up seven times from 1954 to 1982, more than any other illustrator. They are usually shipped in Manilla padded-envelopes or sturdy boxes with additional bubble wrap, styrofoam "popcorn," or other protective layers. We strive to ship within 24 hours of receiving orders--allowing extra time for weekends or holidays.
Books shipped within the United States are usually shipped via USPS Media Mail. Postal charges for Media Mail typically run from $3.17 to around $5. When site-posted charges--usually $4.95--exceed actual USPS charges, any overage helps to defray our packaging and shipping costs.
Those books requiring extra-swift transport or -care are often shipped via USPS Priority Mail. Postage charges usually average $13.50 for up to precisely 2 pounds, but rapidly escalate thus possibly making it necessary to contact clients.
Autographs & manuscripts, art & artifacts are usually shipped in stout boxes with padding and reinforcement. Because Media Mail rates do not then apply, we normally use USPS Priority mail, but also ship via UPS and FedEx. Extra charges for insurance are often necessary for valuable items.
Overseas' shipments (as to Europe) weighing with packaging Not more than 2 pounds usually incur postage charges of between $13.50 to $25. Those between 2 - 4 pounds average around $35. Packages of more than 4 pounds usually need to be quoted.
