D. Jackson at the Dakota. Dated "New Year's Day 1959" along the top followed by an inscription signed by Henryk Szeryng wishing the couple "Heartiest Wishes! In remembrance of the first rehearsal of the Brahms Horn Trio! Henryk Szeryng". Joseph Eger follows with his own wishes "Warm wishes to the musical Jacksons / Joseph Eger". Victor Babin has simply and gracefully added his signature following the wishes expressed by his two colleagues. Near fine.Together with a 10-3/4 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide broadsheet titled in blue "Henry Szeryng / Grand Prix du Disque 1955 et 1957". Printed by Imprimerie Alenconnaise in Paris-Alencon, the broadsheet is illustrated with a quarter-page indigo blue & white portrait of the violinist at top left. Brief biographical text is printed on the lower half of the sheet. Reviews and a list of concertos for violin and orchestra are printed on the verso. The text is in French. Joseph Eger, Victor Babin and Henryk Szeryng collaborated on performances of "Brahms Trio in E-Flat and Beethoven's Sonata for Horn and Piano" which were recorded and distributed by RCA Victor Red Seal in 1960.Charles Douglas Jackson [known as "C.D."] and his wife Grace Bristed Jackson hosted parties and events at their apartment in the Dakota. Jackson worked on and off at Time magazine in an administrative capacity for many years and was made vice president of Time, Inc. in 1940. He was periodically sent on various diplomatic missions by Eisenhower. He also found time to serve on the boards of several organizations, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Free Europe Committee and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.The Polish-born violinist Henryk Szeryng (1918-1988) studied with Carl Flesch, Jacques Thibaud and Nadia Boulanger before he began his concert career in 1933. He was liaison officer to the exiled Polish Premier during World War II while continuing his musical pursuits. Invited by the Mexican government to teach at the National University in Mexico City in 1943, he became a Mexican citizen and went on to travel as the country's Culture and Good Will Ambassador. He was as comfortable playing works by Paganini as he was playing the works of 20th century composers like Carlos Chavez, Benjamin Lees and Michael Ponce. Szeryng championed the works of Mexican composers and served as an adviser to Unesco.The American French horn player and conductor Joseph Eger (1920-2013) was an advocate for progressive causes. A distinguished horn soloist, he also served as associate conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra under Stokowski. He founded several groups and orchestras, including the Symphony for United Nations. While undergoing dental work following an accident in the 1960's his mouth was damaged, ending his career as a horn player, Eger went on to focus on conducting and studied with Pierre Monteux. He went on to found "Aware" in New York City and several other groups and orchestras which advanced progressive values. Joseph Eger was the author of "Einstein's Violin: A Conductor's Notes on Music, Physics, and Social Change".The Russian-born pianist Victor Babin [1908-1972] met his future wife Vitya Vronsky [1909-1992] in 1933 while they were both studying with Arthur Schnabel. Soon after they formed their duo piano team once described by Newsweek magazine as "the most brilliant two-piano team of our generation". Their recordings were issued by RCA Victor, Columbia, Decca and EMI and they performed over 1,200 concerts in North America. In addition to his two-piano concerts with his wife, Babin was a member of Festival Quartet with Szymon Goldberg, William Primrose and Nicolai Graudan and also played and recorded music with several others as we.
