About this Item
A superb large pastel drawing of Livens' children, Leo and Evangeline, circa 1905, on brown paper (as favoured by the artist) (360 x 280 mm), signed bottom right, framed. In 1885 Livens studied at the Antwerp Academy, becoming a close friend of fellow student Vincent Van Gogh, where he painted the earliest known portrait of Van Gogh. He later studied modern French painting in Paris, being particularly impressed with the work of Manet and Ribot. Livens painted in oils, watercolour and pastel, the latter being regarded amongst his finest work. His children were the subject of several of his drypoints (etchings) undertaken between 1905 - 1912. Excellent original condition. (Framed). Provenance: Robert Smith; Belgrave Gallery London, Horace Mann Livens Exhibition 1978, item 47; Private collection. Seller Inventory # 1651A
