Each poem is presented in an exact facsimile of the poet's own handwriting followed by a printed version. The book was published to raise funds for the Cathedral's restoration. George MacKay Brown contributes an introduction to the collection and a poem, "The Kirk and the Ship": the other contributors are Ted Hughes, "The Zodiac in the Shape of a Crown"; Seamus Heaney, "In Memoriam"; Christopher Fry, "Hymn at Lauds.".
