About this Item
55 pp., illustrations. 2 tears at top of dust jacket, minor staining to blank back & spine of dust jacket, minor foxing (age spots) to last few pages, inscribed by author on 1st blank page. These lines are written as a salute to the young and vigorous band of airmen who were members of the small British Air Force transferred from the early Western Desert campaign in the autumn of 1940 to the support of Greece. Initially they fought against an Italian Air Force based in Italy and Albania, commanding a four- or fivefold numerical superiority. Later, they were also opposed by the even larger and more aggressive German Air Force with its advanced echelons based in Bulgaria. Against a fivefold superiority the British were indisputably victorious. Against a tenfold superiority the British airmen held their own to a degree that has been obscured and almost forgotten by the wider misfortunes that led to the evacuation of Greece. and the usual recriminations attending defeat. However, defeat is not infrequently marked by acts of higher individual valour than victory. Although defeat is never the occasion for felicitation or medals, it would be unworthy of us to forget the courage and devotion of the fighting man. The record of the British airmen in Greece probably remains unexcelled by any feat of endurance and heroism in the annals of warfare. The verse form of the story pretends to no great merit, but it is hoped that it may add dignity to these events and point to drama of emotion. 0.0. Seller Inventory # B001V779T6AMA072213
