About this Item
1 page on Gladstone Hotel letterhead, 10.5 x 7.25 inches, New York City, April 26, 1953. In this letter, Gieseking apologizes for not having a better photograph of himself, in full: ".Thank you for your kind letter - am sorry not to have a better photo now - only this postcard of me in Australia (not included). With best regards, sincerely yours, Walter Gieseking." It should be noted that this letter is of great historical importance because on the previous night, April 25th, 1953, Gieseking played a sold-out concert at Carnegie Hall. It marked the very first time since the end of World War II that he was able to play in the United States without his shows being cancelled or boycotted. His alleged support of the Nazi regime turned away a lot of his fans, explaining the scarcity of his letters. Natural folds; faint yellow staining in the right margin. French-born German pianist and composer. Because he performed in Nazi-occupied countries such as France, he was later accused of having collaborated with the Nazis. Seller Inventory # 219482
