William Wellman (1896-1975), born William Augustus Wellman, February 29, 1896, Brookline, Massachusetts; died December 9, 1975, Los Angeles, California; Oscar-winning screenwriter-director of the original "A Star Is Born" (1937), was called "Wild Bill" during his World War I service as an aviator, a nickname that persisted in Hollywood due to his larger-than-life personality and lifestyle; films include: "Wings" 1927; "The Public Enemy" 1931; "The Call of the Wild" 1935; "Nothing Sacred" 1937; "Beau Geste" 1939; "Roxie Hart" 1942; "Ox-Bow Incident" 1943; "Battleground" 1949.
