File also includes 2 additional pages: copy of the original Butterfield's catalog auction listing, + TLS by the dealer who initially bought the Butterfield's lot verifying authenticity. The tax file was originally sold from Miller's personal files as lot 9097 in the Butterfield's Fine Books & Manuscripts Auction, held Sept. 26, 2000, in Los Angeles & San Fran. This is Miller's own unsigned FILE COPY, with accountant's ink stamp "Client's Copy" to key pages. The original signed tax returns would have been sent to the IRS, of course. This item for sale was retained by Henry Miller in his personal files (not signed). Consists of mostly photocopied pages, several stamped in ink "Client's Copy", except for 3 original documents: Accountant's Filing Instructions (w/penciled figures), Gift Tax Return; Donor's Gift Tax Return (all stamped "Client's Copy"). The "Income-Royalties 1966" handwritten copied sheets (2pp) contain entries from a ledger which include fascinating details such as Miller's publisher royalties (Grove, New Directions, Viking, etc.); advance monies paid on "Sexus"; 1965 royalties collected on "Plexus" & "Nexus"; royalties for "Cancer, Capricorn, Bk Spring"; advance amount on "Quiet Days in Clichy", etc. Interesting details include alimony money paid to Eve Miller Ross (Eve, Miller's 4th wife died in 1965, they divorced in 1961), Miller's medical expenses, monies spent on art supplies, publisher fees, etc. Includes 6 copied letters re donations Miller made during 1966 (mostly art items). All in fine condition. THE SECOND ITEM is a related IRS document from the following year, 1967, single printed page w/typed-in entries, titled "Offer of Waiver of Restrictions on Assessment and Collection of Deficiency in Tax and of Acceptance of Overassessment", SIGNED in black ink by Henry Miller & dated 1/29/67. U.S. Treasury Dept IRS FORM 870-AD. The typed Name of Taxpayer listed as "Rellim Productions, Inc." (Rellim is Miller in reverse), c/o a Los Angeles address. Typed below Miller's signature: "HENRY MILLER, constituting the holder of a majority of the voting stock as of the time of its dissolution". Unique related IRS tax form, 1 year following the above tax return. He'd moved to Ocampo Drive in Pacific Palisades in 1963. (From Ferguson: Henry Miller, a Life, p.351): "More than anything else he ever did, the move from the rustic simplicity of Big Sur to this wealthy suburb (Pacific Palisades) surprised those who thought they knew Miller well. His sudden interest in the problem of income tax also seemed at odds with the contemptuous indifference with which he had formerly regarded money. He quickly discovered a tax dodge that enabled him to combine business with pleasure, and soon after moving into Ocampo Drive began producing huge quantities of water-colours for donation to non-profit organizations. Between March & July 1963 he'd churned out 115 such paintings, & was hoping for an appraisal of between $200 & $250 apiece from tax authorities. Emil White wrote it was 'unbelievable what this tax business has done to him. Who would have ever dreamed that HM would show so much concern over such matters'.". Interesting documents from a pivotal period in Henry Miller's life. RARE. Fascinating & unique archive of material. Seller Inventory # 001346
