About this Item
In this manuscript document signed by Frederick, Duke of York and Albany, as Commander-in-Chief in the summer of 1798, he makes recommendations for a number of specific military promotions: two in Light Dragoon regiments, and several more in various Foot regiments. The suggestions are "Most Humbly Proposed to His Majesty" (the Duke's father, King George III). Written on two 13 5/8" x 18 1/2" full sheets, each folded in half and tied together with a black ribbon on the blank left margin, the proposal covers five pages. The verso of the last sheet identifies the document as "Memorandae, Regulars: 25th July 1798." Frederick, the Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827), was the second-eldest son of King George III. A career military man, he created massive and important structural and administrative reforms as Commander-in-Chief, but was mostly ineffectual in the field. There are remnants of glue and paper transfer along close to four inches of the blank left margin on the first page, a 3/4" separation at the right edge of the central horizontal fold on each sheet, and smaller separations at the tops and bottoms of both vertical folds. There is also a small amount paper loss at the right edge of the uppermost horizontal fold of just the last page and some soil, particularly at the edges of the document and on the last page. Otherwise in very good condition. Seller Inventory # A00341
