About this Item
Octavo, 496pp., illustrated. First printing. A crisp, clean copy, near fine, with a few very gentle bumps to extremities. In a fine dust jacket, a tinge scrunched at the spine ends. This copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by Lewis on the title page in the year of publication: "To Sharon Nelson, Thank you for all of your help. With faith and hope, keep your eyes on the Prize. Best wishes, John Lewis 6-9-98." Per the previous owner, Nelson is a state congresswoman from Washington (state). John Lewis was one of the youngest and bravest of the 1960s Civil Rights leaders. Born into poverty in rural Alabama, he partly led the march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, where he was beaten with a nightstick by a police officer. Lewis was elected to the US House of Representives in 1987, where he served until his death in 2020. Signed first printings of this well-regarded Civil Rights memoir are less common than reprints. This one bears a pleasing inscription. Seller Inventory # 12318
