Elephant folio, measuring about 21 x 16 1/2 inches, with twenty original black & white photographs, each of which is editioned on its matt, with a separately printed introduction by Eudora Welty, enclosed in a natural linen folding box with leather labels. Housed in original shipping carton, inked with matching edition number. There is an old dampstain to the carton, which also affects the clamshell portfolio, though this is difficult to see with the naked eye. The photographs are not affected. Some of the matts have varying degrees of foxing; mostly just a few small spots near the far corners; a single example which is much more severe is pictured in our listing; the rest are far, far cleaner, and all of the photographs themselves remain in mint condition. First and only edition. Limited to 90 sets of which 75 were for sale, SIGNED by Welty at the end of her introduction. "The entire edition was contact-printed from the original negatives by Gil and Gib Ford of Jackson, Mississippi." The only exhibition quality collection of Welty's marvelous images, taken while she was employed by the WPA in rural Mississippi. Among Welty's publications, this portfolio is--by an order of magnitude--the rarest and most difficult to obtain. While we know of a few private sales, it has only come to auction once in the nearly five decades since its publication (as a complete set). At the same time, many individual prints from this set have come to auction, and sold well, which is evidence that at least some sets have been broken up. We count eighteen sets retained by institutions, per OCLC, so one presumes that fewer than 50 or so intact sets (excluding those out of series and retained by the publisher) remain extant in private hands (and the real number is probably lower). A rare chance to own this extraordinary work of photography by one of the south's greatest novelists. Polk A25.
