Harper and Brothers, 1944. First Edition. Hard Cover. Signed by Author. Letter pasted in on front free endpaper. Addressed to 'Mr. Dear Mr. Panfield'. Panfield was the Long Island estate of Albert G. Milbank, a prominent New York attorney and philanthropist. In this letter, Sumner Welles thanks Milbank, stating, 'the book was written because of your initiative'. Sumner Welles was the Under Secretary of State for Latin Affairs during FDR's administration and in 1940 became FDR's 'Special Representative in Europe'. Dustjacket has numerous chips and tears along edges, moderate soiling. Price on front flap is intact. Cover has mild wear, very slightly softened bottom corners. Gilt title on spine remains bright. Pages are clean and unmarked. Very nice copy.
