About this Item
First Edition (NAP; University Of Pittsburgh= NAP). Signed and inscribed on the front end paper to George Crouch who was the Chairman of the English Department at the University of Pittsburgh from 1955 to 1965. Dr. Crouch was himself an author. He wrote six books on writing and effective communication, and was considered an authority on Charles Dickens. The signed inscription reads: 'To my friend George Crouch, the best chairman I ever had, from Bob Gale, April 1964.' You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges look very clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The interior of the book is in excellent condition. The pages are exceptionally clean. Scrolling through, I'm not finding any soiling. I'm not finding any creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And the signed inscription represents the only writing to be found in the book. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is in quite decent shape. The wear, as you can see, is minimal. The flaps are in very nice condition as well, just a little toning off their top edges, no soiling, no wear. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. Here is a little bit from the dust jacket: 'This is the first full-length biography of Thomas Crawford, one of the earliest American sculptors to be trained abroad and one of the few of importance in the early nineteenth century. Among his major works are the equestrian statue of George Washington in Richmond, Virginia, the bronze door for the Senate wing of the Capital in Washington, D. C., and the statue of Freedom atop the Capital dome. Crawford was friendly with important men and women among the intelligentsia of his day, especially in New England-- Charles Sumner, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Prescott-- to them and to many other political and intellectual leaders at home and abroad. The book is an intelligent, well-organized study by a sensitive and sensible scholar, and it is well written.' 'Robert Gale was an associate professor of English at the University of Pittsburgh at the time of the writing of this book. He had three academic degrees: Bachelor of Arts (summa cum laude) from Dartmouth College; Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University. In the U.S. Army during World War II he was an Officer in the Counter Intelligence Corps in the British Isles, France, Italy, and North Africa. He was Fulbright professor of American literature 1956-1958 at the Instituto Universitario Orientale in Naples, Italy. There Countess Eleonora Marion-Crawford Rocca, daughter of Thomas Crawford's novelist son, gave Professor Gale the Crawford family papers which are the heart of the biography.'.
