Octavo. 14 pages. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the limitation leaf. Hardcover bound in original black cloth with a brown partial slipcase. The slipcase shows heavy wear and lack the top and bottom edge. The book itself shows moderate wear. There is a ding on the front hinge of the spine and with a corresponding diagonal scuff on the front cover, and there are a couple of scuffs or contact marks on the rear cover. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Some toning to the endpapers. The text appears clean. Limited, numbered edition. This is #51 of 200 copies printed for private distribution and is signed by Johnson. James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) was an African-American author and a Civil Rights activist. In 1920 he became the first Executive Secretary of the NAACP and organized new chapters in the South. He was a strong voice in the Harlem Renaissance. He was best known for "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" (1912) and "God's Trombones: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse" (1927).
