Born in Hague, Warren County, New York, not far from Lake George, in 1826, William Henry Ward spent his youth in the area working with his father. In 1856 the Ward family decided to move to Iowa where there were other Ward relatives and settled in what came to be known as Prairieburg in what came to be Linn County. Ward set himself up with a small general store and over the years was elected to various offices in the community: Justice of the Peace (1858-1874); postmaster for fourteen years; town clerk for fourteen years, as well as secretary of the school board for fourteen years. As its first postmaster, he gave the name Prairieburg to his post office. In 1874 Ward suffered a nervous breakdown and was housebound for four years. Ward never married and died in 1895.
