About this Item
Very Good (covers nice; contents clean & tight). With a number of newspaper articles about Stokes laid-in (enclosed in an envelope). Possibly collected by Seminatore? 8vo., pictorial wraps; 288 pages Signed presentation from Stokes to a controversial Cleveland, Ohio lawyer: "To Kenneth Seminatore whose friendship I value, and whose mind I admire! With warm regards, Carl B. Stokes." A nice association copy! Carl Burton Stokes [1927-1996] was a diplomat of the Democratic Party, who served as the 51st mayor of Cleveland, Ohio. Taking office on January 1, 1968, he was one of the first black elected mayors of a major U.S. city. As mayor, Stokes opened city hall jobs to blacks and women. He was known as a strong administrator, and is remembered for his vision and motivation. The US Federal Courthouse Tower in downtown Cleveland, completed in 2002, was named the Carl B. Stokes Federal Court House Building. Kenneth F. Seminatore was one of Cleveland's smartest and most controversial lawyers. He is perhaps best known for trying to sell the nonprofit insurer Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Ohio to a for-profit firm in the 1990s and reap millions from the deal. He also served on Cleveland's contentious school board, represented embattled clients, ramped up Statehouse lobbying, scolded foes, vainly sued his long-time firm for booting him, and was convicted on two counts of failing to properly report speaking fees paid to lawmakers. He died in 2020 at age 63. Seller Inventory # 57470
