London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1910. Large 4to. Original vellum with large gilt medallion of Peary on frontcover, gilt spine with head of a polar bear, and also a gilt polar bear on backcover, uncut, top edge gilt (ties lacking). With folding coloured map, 4 photogravures and 112 tipped-in photographic illustrations. XII, 326 pp. First edition, limited edition de luxe of 500 numbered and signed copies by Peary and R.A. Bartlett. - The North Pole and the Cook-Peary controversy. Robert Edwin Peary (1856 - 1920) was an American explorer and officer in the United States Navy who made several expeditions to the Arctic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for, in April 1909, leading an expedition that claimed to be the first to have reached the geographic North Pole. Peary's claim was widely debated along with a competing claim made by Frederick Cook. The narrative of Peary's expedition of 1908-1910 contains its organization, personnel, the voyage, the Roosevelt's passage through the ice of Smith Sound-Robeson Channel and winter quarters at Camp Jesup, Cape Sheridan, north Ellesmere Island. - A fine copy. Arctic Bibl. 13230; Stam, Books on ice, p.75; Howgego III, p.479-483. Seller Inventory # 36767

An Excellent Very Clean, Tight and Bright 'As New' copy. Looks unread. 'The American explorer Commander Robert Edwin Peary, USN, (1856-1920) is famous for his discovery of the North Pole; he was one of the last and greatest of the dog team-and-sledge polar explorers. In July 1908 Peary embarked on what he knew would be his last polar attempt. Accompanied by able assistants, including the Negro Matthew Henson, and well-equipped, well-trained Eskimos, Peary led a party of 24 men, 19 sledges, and 133 dogs northward from Cape Columbia. His plan called for various support parties to break the trail and carry additional supplies for the main party of six, which alone would cover the last few miles to the pole. On April 1, near the 88th parallel, the final support party turned back, and Peary, Henson, and four Eskimos went on, reaching 90°N on April 6, 1909. Peary ." I have nailed the stars and stripes to the North Pole". ; Classics of Exploration; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. Seller Inventory # 120225
