Bound in blue leather with facsimile gilt signature on the front covers. Spines titled in gilt, gilt top edges. 596; 594 p. An important association copy of the deluxe, leather-bound edition, one of 101 copies, with both volumes personally inscribed by Truman to Vincent Auriol. A handsome and historically significant set of the memoirs of Harry S. Truman, the 33rd President of the United States (1945 1953). Both volumes are inscribed by Truman to Vincent Auriol, former President of France (1947 1954), an influential figure in shaping the French Fourth Republic and a strong proponent of European reconstruction after World War II. Volume I: "To his Excellency the Honorable Vincent Auriol, with admiration and with kindest regards from Henry Truman. Independence, March 4, 1956." Volume II: "To His Excellency the Honorable Vincent Auriol, from Henry Truman. Independence, July 14, 1956." As President, Truman made critical decisions that profoundly influenced U.S.-French relations and global post-war recovery. His implementation of the Marshall Plan (1948) provided vital economic aid to rebuild France and other European nations, laying the foundation for stability and transatlantic cooperation. Truman was instrumental in establishing NATO (1949), an alliance that France joined as a founding member under Auriol s leadership, ensuring collective security during the early Cold War. His Truman Doctrine underscored the U.S. commitment to defending democracy, aligning with Auriol s vision of a secure and democratic Europe. Vincent Auriol, as the first President of the French Fourth Republic (1947 1954), played a pivotal role in stabilizing France during the post-war period. A staunch advocate for parliamentary democracy and European reconstruction, Auriol worked to strengthen France s alliances, particularly its close relationship with the United States. His presidency coincided with significant developments in global diplomacy, including the establishment of the United Nations and transatlantic initiatives that solidified France s role in the Western alliance. The association between Truman and Auriol reflects the broader U.S.-French partnership, marked by shared goals of recovery, security, and democratic resilience. Their collaboration during this critical era contributed to the enduring transatlantic relationship that continues to shape global politics. Doubleday produced 500 deluxe copies of Truman s memoirs for private distribution, including 101 bound in full blue leather (as with this set) and 401 in cloth. These "personal editions" were commissioned for Truman s use and gifted to dignitaries, relatives, and close associates, with the leather-bound copies reserved for the most distinguished recipients. In the 21st century, Rare Book Hub (RBH) records only two other examples of Truman s leather-bound presentation copies: one inscribed to Eleanor Roosevelt and another to British Prime Minister Anthony Eden. This copy, inscribed to Vincent Auriol, underscores the diplomatic significance and mutual respect shared by Truman and key international figures of the post-war era. . Very light shelf wear; otherwise, in fine condition. Two volumes. Bound in blue leather with facsimile gilt signature on the front covers. Spines titled in gilt, gilt top edges First edition. Association copy, with both volumes inscribed to Vincent Auriol, the first President of the French Fourth Republic.
