About this Item
First Edition (SD). 'Errata Et Addenda' is on the last page with 14 corrections. There was a second (1869), third (1879), and fourth (1902) edition, each one expanded from the previous one. This book is singularly unique for being signed by the author. There is no signed copy of any edition and there is no signed copy of any of Rev. Corwin's other published books. The inscription may be to his wife or to a sister. It reads: 'Mrs. E. B. Corwiin with respect of E.T.C.' I've provided a photo. I tried to find his wife's first name to no avail. Happily, this antiquarian book is in, I'm going to say, darn good shape. You can see the covers in the photos. They have a blind-stamped design. The gilt lettering on the front is very bright, on the spine it is fairly bright. The covers are cleaner than you would expect, just a little bit of light soiling or discoloration. The wear is far from terrible. There's that small loss at the top edge of the spine, perhaps a bit of the same at the bottom edge. There's some rub-through at the corners and just adjacent, and a little bit more at the bottom edge of the front cover. The book is square (the spine is not slanted) and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers. No cracks or spaces anywhere. The signed page has a slight discoloration just to the right of the inscription. It's otherwise in very good shape. The title page has a few small areas/spots of amber-hued spotting. There is no other spotting/foxing to be found anywhere else in the text. The pages are very clean. I saw only a few small inconspicuous spots of light soiling (on the blank margins) over the entirety of the pages. There are no tears. There is one thin loss off the outer edge of the first Index page, not touching the print. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. 'Edward Tanjore Corwin was the founder and editor of the Ecclesiastical Records of the State of New York. He graduated in 1853 from the first class sent out by the College of the City of New York. In 1856 he graduated from the Seminary at the Reformed Church of New Brunswick, New Jersey. After a year spent in special linguistic studies he was ordained and was for years, 1857-63, the pastor of the Reformed Church of Paramus, New Jersey. His chief pastorate of twenty-five years was spent at Millstone, New Jersey. In 1888 he became the rector of Herzog Hall of the Reformed Church Seminary at New Brunswick, New Jersey. Seven years later he accepted a call from the Reformed Church of Greenport, New York. He served in this, his last pastorate from 1895 to 1897. In the latter year he was sent by the General Synod of the Reformed Church to Holland on a mission of historical exploration. The results of his discoveries in the archives of the Classis of Amsterdam and elsewhere are embodied in his Ecclesiastical Records of the State of New York (there are SIX volumes 1901-1905) From the beginning of his ministry he took an interest in the history and larger relations of his denomination. The Manual of the Reformed Church in America was the result. The first edition, a small book of 166 pages, was published in 1859. A second edition, much larger, was published in 1869. A third, still larger, was issued in 1879. A last running 1.082 pages was published in 1902. This work is unique among church manuals. There is no other denomination in the country which has so much information in regard to its ministry and churches in so accessible a form. Besides his major works, he was the author of innumerable essays and magazine articles on historical and biblical subjects.'. Seller Inventory # 003440
