About this Item
Octavo, 260pp. A crisp, clean copy, about fine, in the publisher's reddish-brown cloth. In a good or better dust jacet, with some sliping and darkening to the spine, and some small chips and tears. This copy SIGNED and warmly INSCRIBED by MacDonald on the front free endpaper to his close friend, the Scottish opthamologist Stewart Duke-Elder: "To Dukie from Me. J. Ramsay MacDonald." A note in light pencil from the original bookseller on the front paste-down elucidates the inscription. According to a biogaphical article about Duke-Elder in the Indian Journal of Opthamology: "In 1932, the Prime Minister of England, James Ramsay MacDonald, developed glaucoma and insisted on being treated by a Scotsman. Although young, Duke-Elder had impressive credentials. Duke-Elder successfully performed surgeries for both his eyes and the following year, was bestowed with knighthood. He became the leading ophthalmologist not only in Great Britain, but also around the world. He was the Surgeon Oculist to three successive monarchs, Edward VIII, George VI, and HRM Queen Elizabeth II, holding the Royal post for a remarkable 29 years." This volume of essays by the UK's first Labour PM is uncommon in dust jacket, and particularly signed. This one bears a most pleasing association. Seller Inventory # 11546
