1951. First UK edition. 286pp., a frontispiece portrait of the author and 10 black and white illustrations. Paul Otto Gustav Schmidt (1899-1970) was an interpreter in the German foreign ministry from 1923 to 1945. Under Reich Chancellor Gustav Stresemann, Schmidt became chief interpreter, a position he retained until 1945. At the Munich Conference, he interpreted between Hitler and Neville Chamberlain and Édouard Daladier, and during the war years, he served as Hitler's interpreter during his meetings with Marshal Philippe Pétain and General Francisco Franco. In this book of memoirs he describes the Hitler years, and presents an atmospheric but detailed portrait of the highest level of the Third Reich. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the bottom corners. The contents are tight and clean and a slip of paper bearing the typed inscription "With the Author's Compliments" has been attached to the front free endpaper with strips of white paper tape. The unclipped dustwrapper has some shelf wear with light soiling and rubbing along the top edge. The top of the spine and top corners are bumped and nicked and there is a tear of about 1/2" on the top rear edge.
