XXX From the dust jacket flap: Mexico of the late nineteenth century is accurately and vividly portrayed in these intriguing letters of a successful businessman. The political, economic, and social problems of the northern area of our sister republic are discussed in these absorbing accounts of mining adventure and industrial risk ? exploring and operating the fabuIous Sierra Mojada mines; building and erecting an industrial complex. The historical approach of Mr. Purcell is remarkably modern, as his comments upon his contemporary time show. A devoted family man, William L. Purcell devotes considerable space to writing his children -- in Europe at the time ? giving the type of sound counsel and advice which is the duty of all fathers. Mr. Purcell's letters to his son concerning his choice of career and schooling are a model of sound recommendations. Here, too, is depicted the remarkable progress of Mexico in industrialization. From a nation importing textiles from England in 1875 to a nation exporting textiles in 1894 ? the whole story is stirringly told in the intimate writings of Mr. Purcell. Romantic as mining seems to the uninitiated, it is a time-consuming, dangerous aspect of industry, as Mr. Purcell learned while developing some of the great mining properties of Mexico. How well he succeeds and how he overcomes almost impenetrable obstacles, makes this a must book for those who find romance in business. Anita Purcell, his daughter, is to be congratulated upon compiling and editing the letters of her father. Seller Inventory # 000222
