About this Item

Description:

First edition in English, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title, "For Mrs Clayburg, to whom I want to prove that I indeed write English very well. And as a respectful tribute. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry". The book was subsequently presented by Clayburg, with her inscription beneath, "To Adair (my favourite pilot) a souvenir of another great flyer and human being. Alma Clayburgh Grew", with the "h" in her name underlined. The recipient was the well-known New York opera singer. In addition to her patronage of the arts - she was friends with George Gershwin, Rudolf Firkusny, and many other musicians - Clayburgh sang for the servicemen of the First World War and arranged musicals to entertain them during the Second World War. She met Saint-Exupéry while he was exiled in New York, and subsequently gave this book to her daughter, Alma Eveline Clayburgh-Grew. Octavo. With 12 plates by Bernard Lamotte. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge blue, others untrimmed, a few pages unopened. With dust jacket. Neat ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Spine and extremities toned, lower outer corner of front cover just worn, faint mark to rear cover; jacket price-clipped, folds of sunned spine panel discreetly repaired, extremities a little chipped and creased: a very good copy in good jacket.
