Ownership inscription of Jennifer Jenkins dated 1988 with underlining and markings in her hand in the text. John Gaze was a land agent for the National Trust from 1948 until his retirement in 1982. He was the Trust's Chief Agent for the last six years of his employment. He died before completing the final chapter of the book which was finished by Len Clark, a long serving member of National Trust committees and former Chairman of the Southern Region. Jennifer Jenkins (1921 2017), wife of the politician Roy Jenkins, was the chairman of the National Trust and was responsible for overseeing the addition of 50 villages and hamlets and half the coastline of Britain, including the White Cliffs of Dover, to its estates. During her leadership she had the task of trying to calm the controversy concerning the use of National Trust land for hunting and shooting. She was also chairman of the Consumers' Association and president of the Historic Buildings Commission as well as being active in various other organisations.
