DEAD ON ARRIVAL, poetry by Jaki Shelton, softcover, first edition, signed by author, 1977. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in very good condition, with no tears, dogears, or marks. The upper righthand corner of the pages is lightly crinkled. The poet signed and dated the first free endpaper. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in good condition (discolored around edges, smudge on front cover). Two-staple binding. 8 x 5, 61 pages, 10 ounces XX [From Bing] Jaki Shelton Green is an American poet and the current Poet Laureate of North Carolina. She is the first African American and third woman to be appointed as the North Carolina Poet Laureate. She has authored eight collections of poetry, including Dead on Arrival and i want to undie you. In 2019, she was named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. She currently teaches documentary poetry at Duke University Center for Documentary Studies. Jaki Shelton Green has been honored with several awards for her work. She was awarded the North Carolina Award for Literature in 2003 for outstanding performance (and achievement) in literature. She was also inducted into the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2019, she was recognized nationally by the Academy of American Poets and named an Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellow. Other awards she has received include the African American Writer?s Collective Distinction Award, the NC Writers Network Blumenthal Award, and the Delta Arts Award. She was appointed as the 2021 Frank B. Hanes Writer in Residence at UNC Chapel Hill. Additionally, she was selected as the 2022-2024 Poet Laureate in Residence at the North Carolina Museum of Art.
