About this Item
Small 4to. Hardcover. Pp. 288. Good condition, first edition, signed by the artist Arthur Boyd. With 44 colour plates and 134 monochrome plates. Shelf-wear to dust-jacket, with some staining and sticker marks. Faint creasing on the spine and edges. Ex-library copy with pen inscription on front end-paper. Foxing and dark patches along the fore-edge but the pages themselves are unmarked and clean, with no obstruction to text or images. Arthur Boyd was a leading Australian painter of the middle to late 20th century. Boyd's work ranges from impressionist renderings of Australian landscape to starkly expressionist figuration, and many canvases feature both. Several famous works set Biblical stories against the Australian landscape. Having a strong social conscience, Boyd's work deals with humanitarian issues and universal themes of love, loss and shame. The splendid series of plates includes reproductions of all Boyd's major paintings, both in oil and in tempera. The plates also represent the wide range of work created by such a versatile artist.
