About this Item: The Viking Press, New York, 1966. First edition of Steinbeck's final book. Quarto, original half cloth, illustrated, cartographic endpapers. With 136 pages of photographs, 24 in full color by 55 of the most prominent American photographers of the era including Ansel Adams, Sam Siegel, and Todd Webb. Association copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For John Updike with admiration John Steinbeck." American author John Steinbeck published his most notable works between 1937 (Of Mice and Men) and 1952 (East of Eden), and was awarded both the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940 and Nobel Prize in Literature in 1962. One of the most prolific American authors from the early 1960s until his death in 2009, fellow recipient of the Pulitzer Prize John Updike identified Steinbeck as one of his literary heroes at a young age. Both writers' works explored themes of crises related to faith, injustice, and family dynamics applied to small town 'everyman' protagonists. Both Steinbeck and Updike wrote in a realist tradition featuring their own distinctively rich and imaginative vocabulary and style of prose. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Jacket design by Christopher Harris. Photograph of Steinbeck to the rear panel by Paul Farber. An exceptional association linking two of the greatest writers of twentieth century America. Steinbeck's final book, America and Americans combines the talents of the Nobel Prize-winning author and 55 of the most prominent American photographers of the era. The result is a spectacular portrait of America with its vital array of scenic beauty and human variousness with rich feature articles exploring the American government, American people, Americans as they relate to their land, and the paradox and dream of the pursuit of happiness. About this Item: New York: The Viking Press, 1952. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Steinbeck in blue ink to front free endpaper: "For -- / with many thanks / for two fine bits / of thorn / John Steinbeck / New York 1953". Publisher's green cloth lettered in dark green to front board and stamped in red and black to spine; in the original pictorial dust jacket. About very good, variously soiled and with some wear and toning to extremities, text block edges toned and with faint scattered stains, small dampstain to the gutter at title page, professional repairs to backstrip; dust jacket about very good, price-clipped and with some wear and large chips to extremities, significant paper repairs and reinforcements, most noticeably to the front fold, bottom edge of front panel, and spine ends. Overall, a presentable copy, inscribed by the author in the year following the book's publication. East of Eden features the intertwining stories of the Hamilton and Trask families. The former is based on Steinbeck's own genealogical lineage, while the latter is a representation of the Biblical Adam and his descendants. Considered by the author to be his masterpiece work, East of Eden is a culmination of the major themes and strengths of Steinbeck's other novels: an affinity for nature, the pervasive struggle between good and evil, familial relationships, and American history. During the writing process, Steinbeck chronicled the development of this novel with letters to his friend and former publisher Pascal Covici, the contents of which were published a year after Steinbeck's death as Journal of a Novel: The East of Eden Letters. A lengthy yet popular tale originally intended by the author to teach his sons about the Salinas Valley in California, East of Eden has been adapted into a film, a musical, and a television miniseries. Inscribed by Author. Seller Inventory # JS097

Previous owner's bookplate present to the reverse of the front board. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families the Trasks and the Hamiltons whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. John Ernst Steinbeck, Jr. (February 27, 1902 December 20, 1968) was an American author. He won the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception". He has been called "a giant of American letters", and many of his works are considered classics of Western literature. E-150; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 602 pages. Seller Inventory # 56030

About this Item: VIKING, United States, 2003. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of America's most enduring authors, in a commemorative hardcover edition In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. Set in the rich farmland of California's Salinas Valley, this sprawling and often brutal novel follows the intertwined destinies of two families--the Trasks and the Hamiltons--whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel. The masterpiece of Steinbeck's later years, East of Eden is a work in which Steinbeck created his most mesmerizing characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the murderous consequences of love's absence. Adapted for the 1955 film directed by Elia Kazan introducing James Dean, and read by thousands as the book that brought Oprah's Book Club back, East of Eden has remained vitally present in American culture for over half a century. About this Item: TUSQUETS, 2002. Condition: Nuevo. Seller Inventory # 0010053970

About this Item: Austral 0, Spain. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: Spanish. Brand new Book. About this Item: Penguin Books, United States, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. Centennial. Language: English. Brand new Book. A masterpiece of Biblical scope, and the magnum opus of one of America's most enduring authors, in a deluxe Centennial edition In his journal, Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck called East of Eden "the first book," and indeed it has the primordial power and simplicity of myth. This Centennial edition, specially designed to commemorate one hundred years of Steinbeck, features french flaps and deckle-edged pages. For more than sixty-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,500 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translato.
