About this Item: Philadelphia: Printed for subscribers only by George Barrie & Son, [c.1900], 1900. 6 works in 12 volumes, octavo (220 x 145 mm). Uniformly bound in contemporary purple crushed morocco, gilt decorated spines, gilt foliate panels to front and rear covers with pink and white morocco onlaid flowers, red and purple crushed morocco doublures with concentric gilt rules, purple moire silk free endpapers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Spines sunned to brown, extremities slightly rubbed. An excellent set, handsomely bound. 144 etched plates with captioned tissue guards. Deluxe limited edition, number 8 of 1,000 copies on Japanese vellum. These unexpurgated English translations of six of Zola's more controversial novels were made for the Lutetian Society of London by Ernest Dowson, Havelock Ellis, Arthur Symons, Victor Plarr, Alexander Teixeira de Mattos, and Percy Pinkerton, and originally published between 1894 and 1895. With 30 hand coloured plates by Vertès in the main text. With 2 further suites of his illustrations in monochrome. With a further suite of 30 plates by William Ablett on Japanese tissue, each with an original pencil design in the margin. The two wooden boxes are leather bound with gilt titles, and heavily padded and lined with watered silk. I believe these were publisher's copies. The boxes are rubbed, the main box particularly so and without poppers, the smaller box, containing the suites is fully functioning, the contents are pristine. A unique set. Superbly bound in full burgundy levant morocco, extensively hand-tooled in gilt, with small circular turquoise morocco onlays to the sides; series title ('Rougon-Macquart Edition') at the foot of the spine; inner gilt dentelles; top edges gilt, others uncut; spines slightly sunned and occasionally slightly rubbed; title of 'La Curée' is misspelt 'La Curre' on the spines and title pages (but not on the half-titles); bookplate of E.A. Matison in each volume; a handsome set in excellent condition overall. Number 160 of 1000 sets of the 'Library Edition, with the etchings on Japan paper', comprising unexpurgated translations of six novels from Zola's sweeping Rougon-Macquart novel cycle. The stated aim of the Lutetian Society was 'to issue to its members translations of such representative master-pieces of fiction by Continental authors as are unprocurable in England in an unmutilated rendering'. Henry Richard Vizetelly (1820-1894) was an English publisher and writer who published seventeen translations of Zola between 1884 and 1888, which "brought him notoriety for the first time in his life and turned him into a reluctant martyr [as he was fined and imprisoned for publishing Zola's The Soil], one of the early heroes of the fight against oppressive literary censorship which culminated in the lifting of the ban on Lady Chatterley's Lover in 1960" (ODNB).
