Published by Chatto & Windus, Alfred A. Knopf, London (1922)
Quantity Available: 1
From: Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB (Palm Beach, FL, U.S.A.)
About this Item: Chatto & Windus, Alfred A. Knopf, London, 1922. First edition of Proust's most well-known work. Octavo, 11 volumes, original blue cloth with titles to the spine in in gilt. In near fine condition. Translated by C.K. Scott Moncrieff. An excellent set, rare in this condition. Marcel Proust was best known for his 3200 page masterpiece, A La Recherche du Temps Perdu. First translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as 'Remembrance of Things Past', it was later revised in translation to 'In Search of Lost Time'. Semi-autobiographical, and written in a stream-of-consciousness style, W. Somerset Maugham called it 'the greatest fiction to date'. The first volume was published in 1913. Gradually withdrawing from society, Proust worked during the nights and slept during the day until his death in 1922 at the age of 51. Graham Greene named Proust, "the greatest novelist of the 20th century.". Seller Inventory # 16050

From: JAMES HAWKES (MALVERN WELLS, United Kingdom)
About this Item: Chatto & Windus and Alfred A. Knopf, London, 1922. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition. Eleven volumes. London: Chatto & Windus and Alfred A. Knopf, 1922-1931. All volumes first impression. Comprises: Swann's Way. 2 vols., Chatto & Windus, 1922; Within a Budding Grove. 2 vols., Chatto & Windus, 1924; The Guermantes Way. 2 vols., Chatto & Windus, 1925; Cities of the Plain. 2 vols., Alfred A. Knopf, 1929 (being number 845 of a hand-numbered limited edition of 2,200 copies); The Captive. Alfred A. Knopf, 1929; The Sweet Cheat Gone. Alfred A. Knopf, 1930; Time Regained. Chatto & Windus, 1931 (being number 283 of a hand-numbered limited edition of 1,300 copies). §The first edition of C.K. Scott Moncrieff's classic translation of Proust; the final volume (Time Regained), translated by 'Stephen Hudson' following Scott Moncrieff's premature death the previous year. '[Scott Moncrieff's] Proust, later revised to take account of new French editions, was the classic text which exerted an incalculable influence on readers and on literature in English in the twentieth century. [The translation] is generally scrupulous, rendering Proust's rhythms and images with remarkable flair. His English has acquired a not inappropriate period flavour; although some feel that his version prettifies Proust, he creates in language an attractive and witty narrator worthy of the original', (Oxford DNB). The set - commenced by Chatto & Windus in 1922, taken over by the American publisher Alfred A Knopf in 1929, before publication reverted to Chatto & Windus for the final volume - is an unstated limited edition, the first ten volumes possibly issued in a limitation of 2,200 copies (as Cities of the Plain), the concluding volume certainly limited to 1,300 copies. Uniformly bound in original blue cloth, gilt lettering. Cities of the Plain in original slip-case (battered, but intact); The Sweet Cheat Gone in marked and tattered dustwrapper (latter preserved in removable protective plastic sleeve). Spines of three volumes a bit darkened. Lower board of Swann's Way mottled at fore-edge, bookplate removed from front pastedowns of The Guermantes Way, neat near contemporary bookplate to Time Regained (see photograph). Stain to top edge and endpapers of The Captive and The Sweet Cheat Gone, penetrating margin of last leaves of the former (see photo.). Occasional off-setting to endpapers, and the odd bump or mark here and there. In all other respects, a very good complete set of the first English translation of Proust, all volumes tight and sound, and present in first edition. (**PLEASE READ CAREFULLY** - Heavy/overweight item weighing 6.2 kg packed, therefore additional postage will be required for overseas orders. International customers, please ask for a prior shipping quote). Seller Inventory # 300371

From: Buddenbrooks, Inc. (Newburyport, MA, U.S.A.)
About this Item: New York Albert & Charles Boni 1927, 1927. 2 volumes. First Edition, American Issue, one of 2000 numbered copies only. 8vo, publisher s original white cloth over striped boards of silver and black, housed in the original silver covered slipcase. [8], 352; [6], 384 pp. A very fine set, as pristine, the slipcase with a bit of age, the books perfect. FIRST EDITION FROM MARCEL PROUST S MAGNUM OPUS, REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST. RANKED BY SOME AS THE FINEST ACHIEVEMENT OF THE 20TH CENTURY NOVEL. CITIES OF THE PLAIN is a translation of "Sodome et Gomorrhe I" from the fourth part and a portion of "Sodome et Gomorrhe II" from the fifth part. It took 13 years to write "The Remembrance" in its entirety, as Proust worked on it from 1909-1922. At first he was worried that it might end up at a total of 1,000 pages. Instead, when he finished it , it was in excess of 3,000. In 1912 the manuscript of SWANN S WAY was rejected by the publishers of the Nouvelle Revue Francaise and Andre Gide was forever after to consider it his greatest regret to have misjudged the importance of this great masterwork.
