The trend started in America and has now blown over to Europe. In cities much space remains unused while there are many possibilities to grow vegetables and fruit. These urban farming projects have become important social meeting places in the city. Hans and Nuno Clauzing started their photographic search for urban farming in New York and became so enthusiastic that they went to the most exceptional places afterwards: Berlin, Amsterdam, Gent, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Manchester and even Zaltbommel (NL). They photographed people and their gardens and this book is the special testimony of that search.

Je hoort de term steeds vaker: urban farming of gardening, oftewel stadstuinieren. Zelf je groenten, fruit en kruiden verbouwen in je stadstuin, op je balkon of zelfs op het dak. En het liefst gezamenlijk, want er zijn ook steeds meer initiatieven om tussen de bebouwing, op braakliggende lapjes grond, volkstuinen te cre�ren of een daktuin op een flatgebouw. De trend is ontstaan in Amerika en is langzamerhand overgewaaid naar Europa. In steden wordt veel ruimte niet benut, terwijl er heel veel mogelijkheden zijn om groenten en fruit te verbouwen. Door de ligging van deze urban farmingprojecten zijn het ook belangrijke sociale ontmoetingsplekken in de stad geworden.

Hans en Nuno Clauzing begonnen hun fotografische zoektocht naar urban farming in New York en raakten zo enthousiast dat ze daarna de meest bijzondere plekken opzochten; Berlijn, Amsterdam, Gent, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Manchester, maar ook Zaltbommel. Ze fotografeerden de mensen en hun tuinen en dit boek is daar de bijzondere weerslag van.

Hans Clauzing is opgegroeid in Voorburg met een grote belangstelling voor fotografie en natuur. Na de basisschool bezocht hij de Bosbouwtechnische School in Apeldoorn met het idee om boswachter te worden. De interesse verschoof echter en Hans kwam in aanraking met de sierteeltsector. Hij volgde de 3 jarige A-opleiding op de Rijks Middelbare Tuinbouwschool richting bloemen- en boomteelt. Daarna bekwaamde hij zich als docent biologie en verzorging.
Vanaf 1985 tot 2014 heeft hij voor de klas gestaan op verschillende scholen en opleidingen.
In 1995 trok hij de stoute schoenen aan en besloot om van zijn grote hobby, fotografie en tuinen, zijn werk te maken. Inmiddels fotografeert en schrijft Hans voor verschillende groen- en tuinmagazines als Groei & Bloei, Tuinseizoen, Tuin & Landschap en Home and Garden. Daarnaast geeft hij lezingen met zijn beeld over tuinen, of groen gerelateerde onderwerpen en verzorgt hij workshops botanische fotografie in onder andere de Hortus Botanicus in Leiden.
Nuno Clauzing (Gouda 1995) volgde na de middelbare school de opleiding toerisme. Al van jongs af aan heeft hij, net als zijn vader, een grote passie voor reizen en fotograferen. In 2014 is Nuno in zijn vaders voetsporen getreden en werkt als zzp-er met zijn eigen bedrijf Nuno Clauzing Photography. De Verenigde Staten, waar Nuno voor dit boek New York vastlegde met zijn camera, heeft een bijzondere aantrekkingskracht op hem. De afgelopen jaren reisde hij meerdere malen Amerika door en genoot hij van de verscheidenheid, de skylines van de steden en mooie natuur.

About the Author:

Hans Clauzing grew up in Voorburg, the Netherlands, with an interest in photography and nature. He went to the forestry technical school with the idea of becoming a forester. But his interests changed and Hans came into contact with the floriculture sector. He studied floriculture and trees for three years after which he trained as a teacher of biology and home economics. In 1995 he took the plunge and decided to combine his hobbies, photography and gardens, into his work. Meanwhile Hans writes and takes photographs for various international gardening magazines. Nuno Clauzing (Gouda, 1995) studied Tourism after his secondary education. Ever since he was a child, he has had a passion for travelling and photography, just like his father. In 2014 Nuno started his own company, Nuno Clauzing Photography. Nuno is strongly attracted by The United States of America and captured New York for this book. The past few years he has travelled through America a number of times and has enjoyed its diversity, the skylines of its cities and its beautiful nature.
