The Swiss painter Pia Fries studied in the 1980s under Gerhard Richter at the Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf. Her paintings are defined by how and in what form she applies paint; composition and colouration are not the sole determinants of the way they look. Rather paint as material - its surface producing patterns and criss-crosses - generates painterly suggestions. Like islands, the paint marks hover above a white ground, either isolated or linked by colour trails and strands. In recent years, she has added a new element to her work: serigraph prints that compete with the painted areas to create a trompe l' il effect. This publication presents a comprehensive survey of her paintings over the past 15 years. This title was published to accompany the exhibition Pia Fries: Paintings 1990-2007 at Kuntsmuseum Winterthur April - June 2007.
