Beide Kunstler greifen in ihrem Werk das Erbe der Romantik auf: der Maler solle nicht nur malen, was er sieht, sondern vielmehr das, was er in sich sieht. Die Malerei Noldes ist gekennzeichnet durch kraftige, kontrastierende Farben und einen hohen Abstraktionsgrad. Das Werk Schumachers charakterisiert ein lebenslanges Wechseln zwischen Abstraktion und Figuration, dessen formale Klammer die sinnliche Materialitat und Farbigkeit der Bilder ist. Der Band spannt einen Bogen von Noldes expressionistischen Landschaften und Meeren bis hin zu den gestisch gewachsenen Seelenlandschaften Schumachers und beleuchtet damit erstmals die visuelle Verbindung zwischen Expressionismus und Abstraktem Expressionismus im Werk zweier ihrer grossten Meister. Emil Nolde: 1867?1956, deutscher Maler und Grafiker, gilt als einer der Hauptvertreter des deutschen Expressionismus. Nach Studien, unter anderem in Paris, entfernte er sich unter dem Einfluss des Neoimpressionismus vom romantischen Naturalismus und kam in seinen fruhen farbig leuchtenden Blumenbildern ab 1905 zur Befreiung der Farbe. In Dresden schloss er sich vorubergehend ?Der Brucke? an und steigert in den folgenden Jahren die Farbe zu hochster Leuchtkraft. Im Dritten Reich war Nolde als entarteter Kunstler verfemt und wurde 1941 mit einem Malverbot belegt. In dieser Zeit entstanden seine ?Ungemalten Bilder?, etwa 1300 Aquarelle, die zu seinen bedeutendsten Werken gehoren. Emil Schumacher: 1912?1999, gehort zu den bekanntesten Vertretern der informellen Malerei in Deutschland. Studium an der Kunstgewerbeschule in Dortmund von 1932?1935. Seine Malweise, die er in den 1950er Jahren anfanglich unter dem Einfluss von Wols entwickelte, ist von einer dunklen, braunschwarzen oder leuchtend roten, pastosen Farb-gebung und einer graffitihaften Zeichensprache gepragt, die den Bildern den Charakter alten rissigen Mauerwerks verleiht.
