Even as a teenager, the artist loved to transform herself by dressing up. Contrary to the popular view, the famous Untitled Film Stills (1978-1980) are not her earliest works; rather, the pictures that she took as a student in Buffalo between 1975 and 1977 are the actual first products. During those years Sherman turned playing with disguises into her artistic concept, in order to create many photographs that unite a remarkable number of theatrical elements, and which have remained unknown up until now. Using a variety of wigs, make-up, mimicry, gestures, expressions, and costumes, Sherman reveals different social identities by playing different roles. The SAMMLUNG VERBUND has scientifically researched the conceptual beginnings of her oeuvre and is now publishing a catalogue raisonné of her early work.
