Most of the letters are by Henriette Herz, who had a famous salon in Berlin at the turn of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century. The letters from Italy (1817-1819) discuss the life of the German colony there, especially of the German artists. The correspondence contains references to the social, cultural and political life in Berlin and in Germany during the second decade of the nineteenth century."
