About the Author
Wilhelm Apollinaris de Kostrowitzki, known by the pseudonym Guillaume Apollinaire (1880 1918), was among the foremost French poets of the early twentieth century. He was also aplaywright, short story writer, novelist, and art criticcredited with coining the term surrealism. Apollinaire s works include "The Decaying Enchanter", "The Bestiary", "The Spir""its", and "Caligrams".

Toutefois, ce classicisme ne doit pas faire oublier qu'en son temps ce recueil constitua une véritable révolution poétique : après Rimbaud, Apollinaire transforme toutes les règles d'un lyrisme devenu vieillot à son goût. Il faut pouvoir chanter le monde, jusque dans sa réalité la plus crue, mais aussi jusque dans ses progrès les plus récents : la tour Eiffel ("Zone") côtoiera donc les cellules de la prison de la Santé ("À la Santé"). Sur ce modèle se succéderont alors la mort, la fuite du temps et surtout l'amour : tantôt lumineux, tantôt obscur, mais toujours au centre de ces ivresses poétiques. Avec Alcools, Apollinaire deviendra le modèle de tous les poètes à venir, et en particulier des surréalistes. Le chagrin d'amour, l'émoi devant la fuite du temps ("Le Pont Mirabeau), mais aussi la poésie de la vie quotidienne, de la machine et de la ville cosmopolite ("Zone"). Tel est Alcools, recueil qui rassemble des poèmes écrits par Apollinaire de 1898 à 1913. Entre une inspiration élégiaque qui n'est pas sans rappeler Ronsard et une modernité nerveuse annonciatrice du surréalisme imminent, l'ensemble oscille librement, "plein d'un vin trembleur comme une flamme".
