Concorde remains one of the most iconic and most beautiful aircraft ever to take to the skies and as a result many aspects of its development and its operational career have been covered frequently both in books and magazine articles.

However, this book provides genuinely new perspectives on the Concorde program as it explores how this great aircraft came into being, concentrating both on the design and development aspects of the airliner and on the political background to this exercise in Anglo-French collaboration.

Early chapters look at the various supersonic transport proposals mooted both in Britain and France before Concorde. The following sections examine areas relating to the practical difficulties of supersonic flight such as supersonic booms. The narrative then moves on to how the British and French work was merged into a single program.

Later portions of the book describe the flight test program leading up to service entry in 1976 and the text is complimented by an extensive range of photographs and drawings, a great many of which are previously unpublished.

Review:

"Get the whole, terrific tale. Grab this superb, 240-page study."-- (12/20/2018)

"As memories fade of the ultrafast beauty, we have this wonderful book to remind us of the exceptional possibilities within reach when the imagination of aeronautical engineers is unleashed."--Philip Handleman"Aviation History" (10/08/2019)

From the Back Cover:

Concord remains one of the most iconic and beautiful airplanes ever to take to the skies, instantly recognizable and decades ahead of its time. More than 40 years after it entered service, there is still no airliner that comes close to its performance and allure. As a result, almost every aspect of Concorde's operational career has been covered in detail in countless books and magazine articles.

Building Concorde, however, provides new perspectives on the Concorde, exploring in detail how this unique airplane came into being. Concentrating on its design and development, this work also looks at the political background to this exercise in Anglo-French collaboration which was to pave the way for future international aircraft programs.

Early chapters look at the various supersonic transport proposals and projects mooted both in Britain and France in the 1950s and 60s before the final Concorde design emerged. The narrative then moves on to examine the practical difficulties of supersonic flight, such as supersonic booms, and details how the British and French work merged into a single program.

The flight test program of the research aircraft and Concorde prototypes themselves is then covered, leading up to the entry into service in 1976 of the world's first supersonic airliner. This remarkable story is complimented by an extensive range of photographs and drawings, many of which are previously unpublished.
