Playing cards have been used for fortune telling and divination for hundreds of years. Since then they have evolved and changed to become the pack we now use, with 10 number cards and 3 Royal cards in each suit. (The Joker card was invented by the Americans in 1870 and is not used for readings in this book). The travellers from the Middle East and the Romany people probably introduced cards to Europe in the 1400's. It was then that the split occurred between playing cards and the Tarot pack.
