Sir Ninian Comper (1864-1960) was one of the last of the great Gothic Revival architects, his work concentrating on churches and their contents. He is well-known for his stained glass, his use of colour, and his subtle integration of Classical and Gothic styles. Anthony Symondson, the leading authority on Comper, describes how and why Comper developed his distinctive approach, using early photographs to show Comper's work in its original form. He also charts Comper's friendship with Sir John Betjeman, who championed his work with mixed results. There is a complete gazetteer by Stephen Bucknall, who knew Comper through his family's professional connections, and a reprint of Comper's essay, Of the Atmosphere of a Church . Overall the book gives unique insight into the late flowering of English Gothic Revival church architecture.

Review:
It is a handsome work and is enriched by a complete gazetteer of the works of Comper'--Michael Farrer "Catholic League Messenger, 2007 "

Symondsons penetrating intelligence...illuminates every page.'--James Stevens Curl "The Architectural Review, 2006 "

I encourage you to buy this volume and enjoy its vision of Gothic beauty reinterpreted for the 20th century.'--David Meara "Monumental Brass Society Bulletin, 2007 "

...it is impossible to read [Symondsons] words - and Compers theories - without thinking of the future. There is much that may yet spring from the plentiful well. We may yet complete that tale - for the beauty that Comper sought never dies.'--Matthew Alderman "Touchstone, Jan/Feb 2008 "

One cannot recommend this book too highly.'--Peter Cormack "The Journal of Stained Glass, 2007 "

Fr Symondsons book will remain Compers memorial for many decades to come. It is both a masterpiece and a major work.'--Julian Litten "Church Times, 2007 "

Hopefully, this fine book will help to make [Sir Ninian Comper] better known.'--David Kalvelage "The Living Church, Sept. 2007 "
