The story of six men from the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, sentenced to transportation to Bermuda. The book follows their lives from the Forest, through imprisonment in the UK, the voyage to Bermuda, life in the prison hulks and the work on the Royal Dockyard. It then traces their history upon return. Six men were convicted of rape in the Forest of Dean in 1851 and sentenced to be transported to Bermuda. This true story follows them from their time in the Forest, through their sentence of transportation 'beyond the seas' for life, to the hardships endured in foreign lands. Whilst following their story the book also looks at the conditions in the prisons of the time, the vessels used to transport the convicts and the prison hulks in which they lived whilst working in Bermuda. It concludes by following their story through other prisons in which they were held, both in Australia, Gibraltar and back in England.
