Written at the end of the war, Battalion describes the experiences of a typical, battle-hardened infantry unit. The book is unique in that it captured the immediate memories and attitudes of troops emerging from nearly three years of continuous fighting. The planning and execution of their battles is succinctly described and the lot of the ordinary soldier is related with humour and immediacy. This book is a cross between a regimental history and a true life drama. It details the lead up and overall outline of each action, before then delving into first hand accounts from the men at the sharp end and is really well structured and written by the Adjutant (Staff/Admin Officer) of the Battalion, the 5th Seaforth Highlanders at the time who being an author before the war, put it together using accounts from the men of the Battalion before they were all shipped back to the UK at the end of the War in Europe, so that events were fresh in the memories.
