Throughout the Sultanate of Oman, the beauty of the landscape is accentuated by the remains of fortifications which have played a vital part in the history and heritage of the country. Military and castle forts protected the towns and formed the political centre of a province, while aswar (walled enclosures) provided refuge for village people; watchtowers guarded trade routes, and defensive walls surrounded many cities. With the development of Oman into a modern prosperous state, these fortified strongholds suddenly became monuments to a period that had changed overnight. Many are being restored to their former glory; others stand as proud ruins, bearing witness to a time when they were required to dominate as well as to protect the surrounding countryside. This highly pictorial account of the role of forts and other defensive structures in Oman's history, is complemented by a narrative spiced with intrigues and anecdotes. Researched and photographed over several years, the descriptions and visual images provide a lasting memory of these symbols of Oman's colourful past.
