In 1953 Poole was still short of housing and school accommodation - shortages intensified by the influx of over 1,000 people to the town each year. Sewage was discharged into Poole Bay. There were over fifty miles of gravelled roads, with no drainage of lighting. Most made-up roads were lit by gas. The greater part of the town had a 'Bournemouth' postal address. traffic struggled through medieval streets and Victorian level crossings in the Old Town, where hundreds of homes had been condemned as slums. It was a town centre in name only. Many changes had to come. This book shows how the town set about tackling these formidable problems - despite the delays and frustrations caused by Government restrictions and a natural human reaction to change. 'The Spirit of Poole' tells the story- and contains many illustrations - ofa decade in which Poole faced up to decisions that would shape the town for the rest of the century - and of the characters and controversies involved in the struggle to secure its future.
