Review:
This book is a powerful testament to the importance of story. Narrative can take us on a journey through the reality of pain and suffering, exploring the richness of human experience, and incorporating the possibility of recovery and change. Unsentimental, lightly edited and intelligently framed by short essays from mental health professionals, this book is a welcome draft of realistic optimism for all those involved in the world of mental health provision. More importantly, it is also an inspiration for service users. Offering hope without being patronising, acknowledging anger, shame and disagreement with the professional view, without giving up on constructive dialogue, this book should be made widely available in hospital and community settings. 14 different stories are brought together and all are worth reading. It seems churlish to single any out but the story of Bose, a woman who has struggled for recovery in London and in Europe, is particularly moving. The story of Peter, a psychologist with a long history of psychosis, is a wonderfully deep reflection on life, ideas and spirituality. The best of the framing essays is by Glenn Roberts, who places the importance of story, as a tool for genuine recovery, alongside the pattern identification of diagnosis and the knowledge that leads to intelligent treatment. The stories themselves stress the importance of hope and self-discovery. Many accept the benefits of medication, although often there has been a painful negotiation before a successful drug and dose is identified. However some are more radical, finding support in the Hearing Voices Network and some explore the positive and creative aspects of the illness experience itself. This book is a tonic for the users and providers of mental health services. In an environment of cutbacks and low morale it is a confidence booster and a reminder that the living, feeling human must be at the centre of our world. --Chris Lee. British Journal of Wellbeing

The new national mental health and well-being strategy includes the objective that more people with mental health problems will recover (HM Government, 2011). Over years, my local mental health services (the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust) have developed a Recovery Story project with many service users, and in 2011 they have been recognised as a beacon within the Supporting Recovery initiative, to show the way for other trusts . My recommendation for many other places is that all 14 of these Stories of recovery and hope could help show the way. --Woody Caan, Editor, Journal of Public Mental Health

When a book shares stories of personal suffering, it is a testament to people s courage. More important, when it also expresses the positive transformation of that suffering, it is a testament to human spirit. Such a book can teach, inspire, empower as this one does. We are welcomed into Psychosis: Stories of Recovery and Hope by Hannah Cordle, who conducted the interviews and skilfully edited the stories which form the heart of this book. Three introductory chapters then set the scene. The first, by psychiatrist, Dr Frank Holloway, presents an orthodox view of the diagnosis and prognosis of psychosis. It is a daunting opening to what transforms into such a positive book. ... Next, psychologist Dr Jerome Carson, presents a vivid and valuable explanation of how the recovery approach has challenged the orthodox view of psychosis. ... The third chapter is by Dr Glenn Roberts, a psychiatrist who has specialised in recovery and rehabilitation. At this point, then, we had been told about psychosis, recovery and stories. Now we are about to be shown what they really look like. We now meet fourteen people, who have been diagnosed with a psychosis, and who have the courage and generosity to invite us into their worlds for a while; to allow us t --Julie Leibrich, editor of "A Gift of Stories," Dunedin, University of Otago Press, 1999.

The meat of the book is in the chapters in which individuals give their background, describe their transition to illness, report their experience with hospitalization and treatment providers, and share their movement to recovery with a sense of hope. This structure in each chapter makes the material interesting and educational. The personal stories, which are very open and told with great simplicity, invite readers into a land they might not have visited. Those who do deal with psychotic symptoms will find a community of hope who understand their experience. This book approaches a medical problem with a great sense of humanity. The inclusion of specific topics in each narrative makes this work more than just a collection of biographies. I found the descriptions of interactions with healthcare providers particularly enlightening. Trainees and experienced mental health practitioners could improve their communication with patients by reflecting on the material in persons' stories. I also found myself cheering at the use of models for recovery. Albert Bandura's social learning theory highlights that persons learn best from those who are most like them. I see this regularly in group work with patients with psychotic symptoms. This book could be a tremendous gift for those with chronic symptoms. --Patricia E Murphy, PhD (Rush University Medical Centre, USA) - 5 star review for Doody Enterprises, Inc, USA

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in mental health, and more especially for people who work in the area, for people whose job it is to reduce discrimination against people with mental illness, but most of all, for those of us who experience it.
