Synopsis:
The second volume of Sir Walter Besant's "History of London" covers one of the most exciting periods of London's history including The Civil War, proclamation of the Commonwealth and the restoration of the throne. The accounts of the Great Fire of 1666 and the Great Plague include elaborate detail. When first published it was hailed as the best account ever written of these tragic events in London's history. The people of London played a leading part in the political changes of the period. Besant not only chronicles the story of the Stuart monarchs but also gives an insight into the lives and customs of the ordinary man and woman of the time. His love of London and its history is evident, and gives his work an appeal to scholars and to the ordinary reader alike. "History of London" was originally published during the first years of the present century. This edition reproduces Besant's work in facsimile form, hence preserving the character of Edwardian production, and rendering the book's style as valuable as its content.
