'What an absolute delight... a beautifully written piece of theatre that instantly draws you in into the life and times of both Anne Boleyn and King James I' Whatsonstage.com

Traditionally seen as a pawn manoeuvred into Henry VIII's bed by an ambitious father and his friends, or as a sexually licentious predator, even a witch, Anne Boleyn here is shown to be witty and confident in her sexuality, as she takes on the vicious world of Tudor Court politics. She is in love with Henry - but also in love with the most dangerous ideas of her day. Howard Brenton's astonishing drama memorably brings to life a brilliant but reckless young woman, whose marriage and death transformed England for ever.

Anne Boleyn enjoyed two smash-hit, sell out seasons at Shakespeare's Globe before delighting even bigger audiences on a UK national tour in 2012. Howard Brenton's new history play, 55 Days, will be published by Nick Hern Books in October 2012.

Review:

Anne Boleyn both challenges received wisdom and bulges with theatrical vitality... it eschews mock-Tudor costume drama to offer a compelling portrait of a woman contentiously described by James I as "the whore who changed England". --Guardian

In its rich, quirky evocation of period and animated mix of fervent seriousness and strip-cartoon fun, this is a stimulating companion to Shakespeare's Henry VIII --Independent

Howard Brenton's new play brings light and clarity to labyrinthine darkness...It takes a big, generous spirit to fill the Globe, and in this Brenton follows Shakespeare - not just with asides and soliloquies, but with a large colourful canvas...a rich, invigorating, historical drama. --Daily Mail

Anne Boleyn makes religion sexy - and doctrinal disputes bloody good fun. --Time Out

Ticklishly enjoyable - Teasingly intelligent - A rollicking good drama full of big, meaty characters. --Sunday Telegraph
