Explore the days when the Roman Empire ruled the world through the strength of its mighty army - the true story of its legionaries and centurions, fortresses, conquests and campaigns Over 200 photographs and illustrations accompany this outstanding military history of the Roman Empire 24 newly drawn battle plans and maps explain ancient Rome's military campaigns in outstandingly clear detail Ancient Roman military techniques, strategies and training fully explained by historical experts for home and study use Discover the military strengths and weaknesses of the Roman Empire in this historic account of its rise and fall Detailed accounts of all the major wars from Julius Caesar and Augustus to Trajan, Hadrian and Constantine Its army was ancient Rome's greatest institution - the power source that allowed Rome to impose its idealogical vision and commercial dominationa across the whole of the known world. This authoritative, fact-filled history traces the growth of the Roman army from its early days as an unpaid citizen's militia to its establishment as a world-conquering professional force. Over 200 photographs, specially commissioned battle plans, maps and original artworks demonstrate the aggressive military power of Rome. The detailed and engaging text shows that the Roman army was notorious for its tough discipline and rigorous demands. The book shows that at the very heart of imperial Rome's power stood her legionaries, highly trained, well-armoured heavy infantrymen who could fight in many different ways - storming fortresses, outfacing charging elephants and fighting onboard ships. Vivid accounts of ancient Rome's great military campaigns from Caesar's Gallic Wars to the conquest of Britain and Trajan's campaigns in the East bring the ancient past to life. Battle plans and maps accompany an illuminating expert text to explain the detail of Roman military strategy and technique. The Roman army was more than just an army: as this history shows, in some ways it became the heart of Rome itself creating the world's first superpower.
