At the centre of good counselling and psychotherapy practice is the relationship between therapist and client, a 'therapeutic relationship' that must be maintained to ensure the client is able to fully engage in therapy. This book explores this relationship and the wide range of issues and challenges it can present to every counsellor. Ethics and values are discussed alongside working through prejudice and working with clients who may hold different beliefs. It looks at counsellors who become reflexive practitioners, how they develop sufficient emotional resilience to manage workloads and how they develop an ethical approach to practice. These issues are fully explored within a context of professional dilemmas which most counsellors will face at some point in their working lives. It also includes sections on: - the experience of the first encounter - working with diversity and alternative belief systems - the personal qualities of the therapist - self responsibility and self-therapy The author finishes by looking at continuing professional development, the role of peer support and the advantages of belonging to a professional body or organisation. Written specifically for undergraduate students on counselling and psychotherapy courses, this book is full of practical activities to develop the student's understanding and learning.
