Review:

It is hard to imagine a more inspiring combination than the writing of Kate Roberts translated by Gillian Clarke: this new Gomer edition of One Bright Morning brings together two of Waless most revered women writers to offer a beautiful story perfectly told and finely translated. If there is any complaint to be made, it is that surely a suitably erudite and informative introduction is deserved. In 1913, Ann is in her early 20s. Her father is a quarryman and the family lives on a smallholding in north Wales. She has three younger brothers and is especially attached to the youngest, Bobi, to whom she is like a second mother. Her parents have scrimped and saved to provide her with an education and she is just leaving college in Bangor to begin life as a school teacher. Ann is a new woman in an old world, a quiet rebel who reconciles a traditional devotion to family with a profound questioning of the establishment, from chapel to the education system to the dominant hegemony of capitalism itself. Her individual story would fascinate, whatever its course; the fact that it becomes so quickly affected by the First World War adds a universal appeal. Robertss writing delights again and again: the new year is as thin and bony as a freshly-shorn ewe, peace settles on the kitchen like heavy velvet and, perhaps my favourite, No matter how attractive a man might be, cycle clips could put a girl off. But it is not just the language that gives the reader pause, it is also the hugely compassionate and perceptive evocation of how the lives of ordinary people in Wales were affected by a war that was not really theirs: What, I wonder, if the war had not come? Synopsis:

This is a lyrical, evocative translation of a classic Welsh novel.Set during the years of the First World War, "One Bright Morning" focuses on the story of Ann Owen. We first meet her as a young woman during her last days at college, before embarking on a new career as a teacher. Despite a tentative start, she finds love with Richard Edmwnd, a fellow student. But their love is not without its difficulties. Ann can see those around her suffer in this era of economic deprivation and general hardship, and is distressed by the effect of this lack of opportunity on her own family, particularly her younger brother Bobi. Her personal worries put some strain on her relationship with Edmwnd, but, love conquers all, and the novel ends on a hopeful note, looking in anticipation towards the future.
