This guide provides a new in-depth overview and analysis of a very well-known concept: professional supervision... This approach is reflected in the authors' own infectious enthusiasm. They describe their research into supervision as the result of a request that led to them becoming captivated in the process. Their stance, an apparently honest reflection of their own continuous learning, is reflected in their assertion that 'at the heart of all practice is the ability to assess, reflect, adapt and respond' (p. 21). This does not mean that other matters influencing supervision today are ignored; for example, issues of accountability, the need for 'reporting' on agreed criteria, and other task-]related activities are explored and set in context. Allyson Davys is Head of the School of Social Development at the Waikato Institute of Technology, New Zealand. She has been involved in the development of supervision practice for the last 15 years, and has delivered supervision training to practitioners from a range of professions. Liz Beddoe is Head of the School of Counselling, Human Services and Social Work at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. She has a long-standing commitment to the education and professional development of social workers and has published many articles on social work education, supervision and professional issues.
