Sir Christopher Wren (1632-1723) was one of Britain's most distinguished architects. Strongly influenced by French and Italian baroque styles after a visit to Paris in 1665, after the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the old city the following year, a huge opportunity became apparent for Wren. He produced ambitious plans for rebuilding the whole area, which were mostly rejected for a number of reasons. However, Wren did design 51 new city churches, as well as the new St Paul's Cathedral. Further commissions included the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, a hospital in Chelsea for retired soldiers, Trinity College Library in Cambridge and the facade of Hampton Court Palace. Replete with colourful images of his buildings, this concise biography tells the story of a man whose creations are still popular tourist attractions to this day, but also casts light on Wren's credentials as an intellectual and founding member of the Royal Society.
